Hello Red Room Readers!

December 20, 2007, 10:11 am

I'm a big fan of brevity and simplicity, the less is more approach. I love reading something that is seemingly simple but then discovering the hidden layer of meaning. Reading is after all, a participatory activity, an archaeological dig of sorts.

I enjoy working with schools and getting kids excited about reading. All the reports about the declining interest in reading are very depressing. We  need to change that. Can you imagine a generation that doesn't value reading? A scary thought indeed.

My next book, LAUGHING WITHOUT AN ACCENT, comes out in late April. I am SO excited and am trying hard not to be SO excited.  The waiting is hard. I always tell my kids that when they are waiting for something, they should just focus on something else and not think about waiting. I am trying to take that advice so guess what I'm doing these days? I am baking like a mad woman. This week alone, I have made two lemon cakes, one chocolate chip bar and am currently soaking dried apricots, raisins and cranberries in brandy for a fruitcake.

In the meantime, I wait, but my house smells good.

In case anyone wonders what the CEO does for fun on the weekends

I just inserted three apostrophes, one comma, and a space into Thomas's comment above.

And, I will name some names of blogs I thought were fantastic...once we get our "Blog Blog" up and running, so there's one place you can check to see who said something interesting each week!

Dropping in to say hello

Firoozeh, hello!

Thomas encouraged me to visit a few of the authors' blogs, so I'm dropping by to say hello, to tell you that I can smell those lemon cakes from here, and to ask....When are you serving?

I grew up in Los Angeles, but my family always associated Whittier with Richard Nixon, so we rarely passed through. (Were Democrats even allowed there in the 50s?)

Come on over to my blog and say hello. I can't offer lemon cake, or any of those other delicacies you mentioned, but I promise to do my best not to make fun of Whittier.

baking as superb distraction from waiting OR writing

hello Firoozeh, my friend!  Here we meet in virtual space instead of on our neighborhood walks.  I love your post about baking -- mmm! -- a lovely thing, a lemon cake!  GOOD LUCK with your publication; I shall be first in line to buy the book.

All my best wishes for a fruitful and writerly and pastry-filled 2008,

Harriet

Wonderful chances to meet you in San Francisco!

I just saw your events calendar and realized there are several upcomming opportunities for our staff and for your readers to meet you if they're in the San Francisco Bay Area. I encourage everyone to take a look at your calendar in the sidebar on the lower right of your author page.

I hope you get huge crowds of well-wishers at all your events.

Hello Patry Francis!

Today is the day that Patry Francis' book, THE LIAR'S DIARY, comes out in paperback.

People always ask me how I find time to write since I have three kids. Patry has FOUR kids, works as a waitress AND she writes.  Just goes to show that some people are born to write.
