Hot Pick: A Great Magazine for Your Work

July 1, 2009, 8:08 am

The Asheville Poetry Review, founded and edited by Keith Flynn, is a vital, energetic, intercultural review, publishing new writers alongside Baudelaire and Antonin Artaud.   The editor is non-stuffy, friendly, a rock star (literally, a rock star).  He's open-minded, and loyal to his contributors and friends.  A non-academic, he lacks the timidity of those who live in the ivory tower. He's larger than life, a Promethean culture hero.  Not afraid to roll up his sleeves and do all the hard work of getting a magazine out year after year.   The art work is stunning, too.

Send him your best work and tell him I said to do so.

More hot tips in my next few posts.  So save a few of those great poems for other editors!  Good luck!

I had the good fortune to publish once in the Asheville Poetry Review, Marilyn, and I would second your recommendation to poets to submit their work there. The journals are physically high quality (beautiful covers, generally) as well as in their content. The APR and Malaprops Bookstore are only two of the great literary things going on in Asheville -- but two of my favorites!

Peace.

Dearest Evie, we agree on so many things!

I hope that Squaw will be wonderful. You should know that many of us have secretly renamed it "Woman Warrior Valley."

that's too good . . .

. . . to keep it secret! I'll have to use the alternate moniker often during my week there. : ) Thanks for letting me in on it!

Looking forward to some breathless (high-altitude!) days of poetry...

Nothing better than Squaw (aka Woman Warrior)

I think Sharon was the one who came up with the alternate name.

I hope you have a breakthrough experience in your work--

Lucky students who work with you!
