Purple, Rain

October 5, 2008, 9:06 pm

Two days spent under the shadows of clouds in angry hues of purple and mint, those troublesome colors that spell "tornado warning" at dawn when even royal palms bend under the weight of wind and water. I didn't let them spoil my weekend, as I was on a mission to experience, collect, and communicate. Sheets of rain kept the crowds away for the Step Out! for Diabetes walk I came here for, but our team - Florida Hikers - are no wimps, and we swagger out into the canyons of downtown West Palm Beach, pounding the pavement through puddles in an unfamiliar urban turf. This morning, despite the drizzle that turned to pour, I walked with a local legend through a wetland park that he and his wife gifted to the people of their community, and those people stopped to say thanks. From the chatter of the purple gallinules, the wildlife was happy, too.
