Executive Director: Caroline Gabel

Year founded: 1875

Accomplishments:

  • The Organization provided twenty-one Global ReLeaf grants last year to plant over one million trees in fourteen states and four countries.
  • In 2007, American Forests partnered with several local organizations near New Orleans to replant more than five thousand trees that were lost to Hurricane Katrina.

Profile: American Forests is the nation's oldest nonprofit citizens' conservation organization. Originally the American Forestry Association, it was established in 1875 by physician and horticulturist John Aston Warder, along with like-minded citizens in Chicago. During the administration of President Calvin Coolidge, the organization donated the first living national Christmas tree for the White House, a Norway spruce.

Since 1940 the organization has maintained the National Register of Big Trees, a list the largest and oldest trees in the United States. Today American Forests is a leading proponent of community based forestry in the United States, providing workshops, publications, and other resources to help people in communities use their resources in exciting new ways.
