Cold Comfort

Poem

January 1, 2006

COLD COMF0RTS

A burglar, cleaning out a house

Drops a pearl necklace

As he leaves.

A mugger, rifling your wallet

Throws back a picture of your ex-wife.

Slitting the tongue of a Crow

Enables it to speak English.

Clubbing the foot

Of a Bengali baby

Brings home the bacon.

Protesting the war

A man immolates himself

Offering homeless vets

Temporary relief from the cold.

Getting what you ordered

Served on your lover’s heart---

Tears as salty gravy.
