Charles Flint is a snake-handling Pentecostal preacher living in Tennessee in 1946. His 10-year-old son Jacob is physically deformed but spiritually gifted. Together they spread the word of God by drinking poison and handling deadly serpents through rural Appalachia until a tragic accident sets the boy on a different path.
