Bella DePaulo "hilarious, superbly researched" -- The Washington Post

Bella DePaulo

Biography

Bella DePaulo (Ph.D., Harvard, 1979) is a social psychologist and the author of Singled Out: How Singles are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After. It was published in hardcover by St. Martin’s Press in 2006 and in paperback in 2007. Singled Out is a myth-busting, consciousness-raising, totally unapologetic take on singlehood.

In Singled Out, and in her other work on people who are single, DePaulo has drawn from social science data to challenge the stereotypes of people who are single. DePaulo has also offered seminars and workshops on topics relevant to singles.

Another area of expertise is the psychology of lying. DePaulo has studied deception for more than three decades, and hopes that her next work of nonfiction will be on that topic.

DePaulo has written op-ed essays for publications such as the New York Times, Newsday, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. She is also a contributor to the Huffington Post. Her essay, “Single All the Way,” was published in the anthology Single State of the Union, edited by Diane Mapes.

Stories about Bella DePaulo’s work have been published in newspapers such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times. Magazines mentioning her work include Time, the New Yorker, U S News & World Report, Business Week, AARP Magazine, the New York Times Magazine, and many others.

DePaulo has appeared on radio shows such as NPR, and television shows such as The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, CBS Sunday Morning, NBC Nightly News, Hardball with Chris Matthews, and CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360.

Bella DePaulo is a Visiting Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has been a visitor since 2000 and plans to stay for as long as she can afford a place to live.
