Right now I'm writing a nonfiction book for FSG, The Undressing of America, about the bizarre cabal of cultural fringies who revolutionized publishing in the '20s with the original "reality media." And I'm collaborating with my old National Lampoon-mate Will Jacobs on two humor books that you can start reading on this very page: a novel set in '40s Hollywood (sort of) called Million Dollar Ideas and a series of short stories about a would-be writer's friendship with a superhero, My Pal Splendid Man. Recently I finished the screenplay adaptation of my previous book, Men of Tomorrow, mostly about the guys who created Superman and how they got screwed by their publishers and ultimately fought back, but I don't know yet if it'll get "green lighted" for production.
I was born in Montana through an odd set of circumstances but grew up in California's Santa Clara Valley (Los Gatos and Gilroy) and have lived in San Francisco since 1980. My first published work was as a humor writer, with The Beaver Papers in 1983 (written with Will Jacobs), followed by five years with National Lampoon and contributions to Paul Krassner's Realist. During the late '80s and early '90s I wrote a lot of comic books, working on Batman, Justice League, Pokémon and a bunch of other series, creating or cocreating my own comics including The Trouble with Girls, Prime, Oktane and The Haunted Man. After the birth of my son Nicky in 1992 I shifted toward non-fiction, including a couple of books I'm very proud of: Killing Monsters (Basic Books 2002) and Men of Tomorrow (Basic 2004). I joined the San Francisco Writers Grotto in 2005 and am very glad I did.
