Janis Cooke Newman is the author of 'Mary,' a historical novel about Mary Todd Lincoln, chosen as Best Historical Novel of 2006 by USA Today, and a finalist for the LA Times First Fiction Award. She is also the author of 'The Russian Word for Snow,' a memoir about adopting her son from a Moscow orphanage.

Newman is also a travel writer whose work appears frequently in the LA Times and the SF Chronicle.
