Mary Bergin Travel Columnist, Author, Photographer

Mary Bergin

Biography Wisconsin, my favorite place on the planet, is what I write about and photograph more than anything else. I am a lifelong newspaper journalist who eased into travel writing in 2002, when my weekly and syndicated "Roads Traveled" column began. Circulation of this regional product exceeds 250,000. I have lived in Wisconsin for all but two years and have no intention of calling anywhere else home, but travels also take me to faraway places: Japan and Korea, Australia and New Zealand, Central and South America. It's all good. No matter where I land, global connections to my native state are sought routinely. I consider my work to be one way to build bridges of cultural awareness and appreciation in this increasingly complex, misunderstood and troubled world. “Sidetracked in Wisconsin” was my first book, and in late summer 2008 we'll introduce “Hungry for Wisconsin,” about culinary travel. Both books are Itchy Cat Press products; these publishers are former University of Wisconsin Press employees who decided to be their own boss. I’ve also been a “Traveling Shepherd” columnist for Milwaukee’s Shepherd Express and write for other publications (including Global Traveler, AAA Living, Rand McNally, Dorling Kindersley Travel Guides, Chicago Tribune and Wisconsin Trails). I seek projects, not employers, at this phase of life. Affiliations: Midwest Travel Writers Association member and website editor. Society of American Travel Writers member and co-chair of membership evaluation and professional development in the Central States Chapter.
