  • Celebrating Autumn

    November 15, 2009

    • A  warm sunny Saturday afternoon saw folks sitting on the steps and picnic tables at John A. Logan College entrance.  Fragrance floated from the Karmel Korn trailer, and relaxed shoppers coming and going to and from the filled parking lot were enjoying the beautiful autumn day.  Bales of straw artistically topped with pumpkins, squash, and gourds set the theme for the annual fall festival of ...
  • Hurricanes, The Mad

    June 22, 2009

    • Hurricanes, The Mad Gasser, and the Kokomo Hum   For the second Thursday evening in a row, I saw writer friends.  On the second Thursday of the month, Southern Illinois Writers Guild sponsors an open mike at Latta Java in Marion. When I can, I like to go to hear others read.  I might not have made it this month since Jeannie and Cecelie were visiting, but I had a phone call that ...
  • Running Late

    March 20, 2009

    • When life is too abundant, sometimes I don’t have time to write.  Sometimes I simply forget.  And that happened again this week.  So I am running late with this blog.  Monday I told the story of Priscilla the Hollyhock Girl from the Trail of Tears to a large group at the Centralia Historical Museum.   As always, there were those who had ancestors who dropped off the Trail of Tears.  In ...
  • An Evening with Catherine Field

    February 19, 2009

    • “We are here because we must write,” she said early in her talk—meaning all of us in that room at John A.Logan College.Oh, yes, I thought.  I must.  I cannot imagine life without attempting to put life into words.  I do not know why the breeze on my skin, the peach on my tongue, or the laughter in my ear is not sufficient without words.  But for me the words after are the essence of the ...
  • Mid-Winter Mish Mash

    February 15, 2009

    •      One day the weather is Southern Illinois allows us to go coatless; and the next day when we try it, the wind makes us sorry. Today was pretty again although a jacket was in order.     Son-in-law Bryan and Brianna were down from Lake Saint Louis yesterday. Somehow Brianna and Sam ended up at the Illinois Centre Mall, where I spent the day with Southern Illinois Writers Guild members ...
  • Busy Week Did Not Help My Absent Mindedness

    January 18, 2009

    • Well, I just this moment discovered that I did not blog on Wednesday night. Why? I have no idea! I proudly announced at Writers Guild on Thursday night that I blog twice a week, and I thought I was telling the truth. It did not occur to me then or until now that I somehow missed Wednesday night. What was I doing Wednesday night? I have no idea. Probably surfing. Or maybe I went to bed early. I ...
  • Variety Is the Spice

    January 11, 2009

    •             This first full week of 2009 has been full of varied activities:  INR reading, working on a feature article, visiting Jari Jackson, Kroger’s Senior Citizen Day, Center Church monthly business meeting, doctor’s appointment, prose and poetry reading at Hardee’s, visiting my daughter Katherine, going to the new restaurant at Goreville, attending our first swim meet at ...
  • My Cup Is Squashed Down and Running Over

    November 20, 2008

    • Driving home from Writers Guild through snow flurries tonight, as I approached Woodsong, it dawned on me I did not blog last night. I had ridden up to Cahokia yesterday afternoon with fellow Trail of Tears Association board members to meet another board member at the library there. We had to finish before their 7:30 closing. After a quick stop at a drive-in for coffee and hot chocolate to keep us ...
  • Autumn Activities

    November 12, 2008

    • Members of Southern Illinois Writers Guild offered their books at our table Saturday and Sunday at the annual AutumnFest at John A. Logan College.  We also display and sell our anthologies, but we have noticed a big decline in buying since the rise in gas prices.  I enjoyed the day there Saturday with other writer friends.  Our village church will be having our Thanksgiving feast this Saturday ...
