- I love all my book covers! B&H does such a fantastic job capturing the mood of the story with the cover. How important do you think covers are? And which cover do you like the best? - Vintage printed Dave Eggers' What Is the What clothbound without a jacket, and Eggers' McSweeney's followed suit (or suit-less) with Zeitoun. Now Penguin will release in October/November a beautiful series of clothbound classics, designed by illustrator Coralie Bickford-Smith. These are a relief from Penguin's earlier forays into graphic novel-type covers, and say "classic" far more ...

- Something about two articles caught my attention about art, design, photography and process. The first, “Familiarity Breeds Contempt” appears on the blog Rap Sheet, by J. Kingston Pierce, and presents numerous book jackets that use the same stock photo. Granted, most of these copycat covers are for crime novels, but there's also an adaptation of the same image on James Patterson’s detective ...

- I'm joining all of Red Room's Authors in writing a short blog post on this week's topic: "What was a misstep that you (or your publisher) made with publishing your first book--and how would you do things differently if you could?" - I love pulp fiction book titles and vintage paperback book covers, and I just found on a website that, because of my own personal taste, I assume everyone will enjoy: http://www.bookscans.com. The navigation is a bit difficult, but there are over 30,000 paperback covers (as well as a huge collection of colophons, also known as printers marks, which is what I was looking for in the first ...

- SPR has published a couple of my pieces recently:"One of the Many Author Sins I'm Most Enjoying," and also "But, They Do Judge a Book by Its Cover," an interview with book cover designer Cathi Stevensen. Some informative stuff, there, about what people look for in a cover, why not to design your own even if you have Photoshop, etc. There's also a very energetic discussion ...

- As I tracked myself down while filling in the Google forms for the Google Book Search Settlement, I came across this cover for one of my books. It is the Italian translation of THE BONNER DECEPTION. I've hunted for it before, so I don't know why it came up this time. Still, it is my one naughty cover, and it pleases me. THE BONNER DECEPTION centers around a NATO Military Complex, and the ...

- This woman, Heather, reads more books in a month than I could stuff in my trunk. She's truly mind-boggling. If you want to know about a book, she's probably read - and thoroughly reviewed - it on her blog, "Age 30+...- A Lifetime of Books."Today she posted a review of my own novel, Homefront. The bad:I'm not usually picky about book covers, but I have to admit that this one was ...

- Maybe you can't judge books by their covers, but book buyers are certainly influenced by them. Intriguing images, embossing, extras like sparkles and glitter or cutouts all help to attract the reader's eye and encourage them to at least pick up the book and consider it. There are lots of ideas about what works and what doesn't in getting a reader to buy a book. As an example, my buddy and ...
