- By now it’s no secret that the Iraq War has been a disillusioning experience for many of the U.S. servicemen sent there. The literature on the war has, so far, been mostly written by journalists. There’s plenty of it, and like most journalism it runs pretty mainstream and inoffensive, no matter how bloody the scenes depicted. But Michael Anthony, a veteran of the war, has a different ...

- The last couple of articles about me and my books focus on the fact that I'm rather happy. In this month's Hadassah Magazine, I'm "affable and trim." High school friends reading this on Facebook may wonder where the affability was back then...Profile: Hadassah Magazine October 2009 Matt Beynon Rees By Leora Eren Frucht Only gritty, dark crime fiction could evoke the corruption—and ...

- (This is indeed last night's blog. It'snow Saturday morning and I truly dislike gmail. It keep trying to take over my world. I am going to kill it dead.) - Thomas Carlyle wrote that “A well-written life is almost as rare as a well-spent one.” There may be some debate as to whether Timothy Leary’s life was well-spent. However, his biography by John Higgs is one of the most well-written and compelling books you’ll ever come across. “I Have America Surrounded: The Life of Timothy Leary” is an alternative history of the turbulent times that ...

- Last night I whizzed through terrorbyte again - hoping to see anything I'd missed or failed to explain. I left a few comments for my beloved editor and sent the manuscript through. With a smile. Onto my second glass of wine ...

Last month it was David Brin and Kevin J. Anderson. Next month I have more great authors lined up. I'll also be off to conventions to hawk my own book, Awesome Lavratt, and have fun with many other SF/F authors I've met ...

- Today was spent running about like a headless chicken trying to get things done - I accomplished little in the way of writing and suspect the same of sales. BUT - I did trot up to Bex and buy her disinfectant, anti-bacterial hand wash, apple juice, a large pack of nappies (diapers for you yanks), and dettol surface spray. All three of her boys are spewing with a tummy bug... nice. We didn't stay ...

- Megan Abbott is the female James Ellroy. When I read her Edgar-award-winning “Queenpin,” I immediately was put in mind of everyone’s favorite noirmeister. Dig it. Even more I loved “The Song is You,” in which Abbott took a real-life missing persons case from 1949 and plumbed her Hollywood characters for real debauchery and dirt like Ellroy at his best. Dr. Abbott (she has a Ph.D. in ...
