  • My Book Deal--Heidegger's Glasses--is Real!

    October 20, 2009

    • HEIDEGGER'S GLASSES, the first book to be published by Phoenix, in it's new direction as a serious literary press, is coming out this May.  The Editor-in-Chief has been consulting me about the cover, and I just got this write-up for an advance promotion on Amazon. (There's one there now for the Audio, but the Editor-in-Chief thought it was too purple.) Heidegger’s Glasses opens during the end ...
  • Getting Published (maybe) IV

    October 20, 2009

    • Update on my publisher. The first chapter of the manuscript was passed to two other editors, one responded that it wasn't her style either and she hadn't read the authors I quote. Shakespeare? She calls herself an editor and she's never read Shakespeare? Doesn't even recognize "to be or not to be?" Did she even go to high school?
  • Seth's Blog: True believers (and the truth)

    October 19, 2009

    • The truth of the market is that the market you sell to isn't filled with true believers. It's filled with human beings who make compromises, who tell stories, who have competing objectives. And as a result, the truth of the market is that the products and services that win (if win means you can make a good living and make positive change) are rarely the products and services that ...
  • Great expectations

    October 17, 2009

    • "Are your books doing as well as you hoped they would?" I have been asked this question so many times, and I haven't once been able to answer it. I have no answer. In order for my books to do as well as I hoped, I'd have had to hope in the first place. I was told by a very dear friend, when I was sixteen years old, that there's no money to be made in writing about art. He'd been doing ...
  • On Waiting

    October 17, 2009

    • I've been thinking a lot about the subject of patience, and waiting for things.  This month has had a weird feel, a bit like the first few weeks after Christmas and New Year's, when all the fuss is over, but it's too early to plan for Easter or summer or whatever. For example, I'm finished with the extensive rewrite on Houses that I've been working on for the past few months.  I've researched ...
  • 'Publisher Seeking Authors!' Danger, Will Robinson?

    • A writer e-mails me to ask about ad ("Publisher Looking for Authors!"). I reply-- but is your answer different? Respond, and I'll forward your comments.--Earl Merkel-----------------------  Sent: Thu, Oct 15, 2009 10:17 am Subject: FW: publisher looking for authors  Dear Earl:  I received this through my writing group.  The article talks about publishers – have you heard of ...
  • Money and the Writer

    October 16, 2009

    • Like my father, who was a fine doctor with abysmal money sense, I'm not the most practical person in the world.  I've worked in the arts all my life, and I've probably just been lucky sometimes to keep my head above water.  I do try--I read my contracts, I keep track of my delivery and acceptance payments, I struggle to understand royalty statements.  But when things go well, and a bit of ...
  • PUBLISH YOUR NONFICTION BOOK: Strategies for Learning the Industry, Selling Your Book, and Building a Successful Career

    October 15, 2009

    • Dear Fellow Writers --         I felt hesitant and anxious before beginning the process of gathering industry quotes with my co-author Sharlene Martin for "Publish Your Nonfiction Book." Still, the November release date from Writer's Digest books was around the corner.  It isn't often in such a competitive business that events require us to compile a list of friends according ...
