  • Colored Chalk: Issue Four - Big Brother in my Pocket

    October 4, 2008

    •  Issue Four of the Colored Chalk zine has hit the virtual bookshelves. I swear, this thing just keeps getting better. And I don't say that as an ego stroke considering I am a co-editor. The proof: I had absolutely nothing to do with this issue. This issue contains some fantastic stories by Charles King, Richard Thomas, Jason Kane, Colin McKay Miller, Chris Deal, Michael A. Kechula, Gary Paul ...
  • I Could Write A Great Novel If Only I Had A Story to Tell

    October 1, 2008

    • Okay, I stole this title from Barbara Sher (the Wishcraft lady), who has a book entitled I Could Do Anything If Only I Knew What It Was. I am about to usher myself and a passel of writers and hopefuls through the process of planning and writing and revising a novel. In October, we will plot and plan, write about writing, fumble and feel and think our way to the stories we think we will tell. In ...
  • A free anthology to introduce myself to new readers

    September 3, 2008

    • With the impending October US release of my crime noir thriller, Small Crimes, I decided the best way to introduce myself to new readers would be a free anthology of some of my short crime fiction. I've put together seven stories that were previously published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, Hot Blood, Bullet and Futures, as well as one new never before ...
  • What do You Want Me to Blog About Next?

    August 9, 2008

    • Do you want to read an update on my rat problem?  Or, would you prefer to hear my take on the political scene?  Do you want to learn about my latest encounter with subtle, possible prejudice?   Or, would you like to hear about my trip to hot, humid, stormy, Chicago last week to visit my warm, extended family?   Or, how about the time I read with other authors at a nudist camp on a ...
  • Good, Gooder, Goodest

    August 6, 2008

    • Let me tell you a story about a writer at work. He or she rises early or late, changes into clothing or stays in pajamas, and sits down at a computer/legal pad/coffee shop to pen the masterpiece of the century. While he sips coffee, she outlines her next attack. While she's planning and plotting, he jumps in to provide backstory for the newest character. Coffee or tea, scratching from time to ...
  • 20080803

    August 3, 2008

    • 20080803 I got to thinking last night about stories.  I have joined a couple of gay chat sites over the years, and have virtually met some really interesting people in countries as diverse as Algeria, the UK and Colombia, among others.  All of these sites have men, and women, members who are interested in connecting with other people in various ways, from the intellectual to the physical.  ...
  • Diary of a Bad Year

    June 19, 2008

    •   A novel? No. I don't have the endurance any more. To write a novel you have to be like Atlas, holding up a whole world on your shoulders and supporting it there for months and years while its affairs work themselves out. It is too much for me as I am today. Still, I said, we have all got opinions, especially about politics. If you tell a story at least people will shut up and listen to you. A ...
  • Finches II

    June 12, 2008

    • In the spring they come calling to me on my balcony. A whole raft of finches scrapping, singing and just carousing on the balcony of my inner city apartment. They bring me such joy, watching their puffed up mating rituals. Sometimes, I see a finch that is so red and sings so well that I can see myself marrying and settling down with him.
