  • OUR GUTENBERG OF THE AGE?

    November 17, 2009

    • I don't promote such avenues nor advise against. They exist (indeed proliferate), and I find this one particularly interesting.  http://www.thenervousbreakdown.com/  An online literary publication type deal.Born AgainLadies and gentlemen, welcome to TNB 3.0! As you will see, the new site features four main sections: Nonfiction, Fiction, Poetry, and Arts & Culture. Each will be ...
  • My book shelves....

    November 14, 2009

    • When moving out of a sprawling suburban home six years ago, my husband and I scanned the floor-to-10-foot ceiling book shelves in our den. Each of us packed the books we could not part with. The rest—about 2,000 books—were donated to charity. In our new Manhattan apartment, we settled into two offices lined with shelves, but since my husband’s office was larger, once in a while I snuck there ...
  • Slogging through the 1st Draft

    November 12, 2009

    • I wrote today's Twitter (1/2 pt. = commits to journey. Things seem to get a bit better. They're about to get way worse = Crisis 3/4 pt.) based on something I heard Andre Agassi say in an interview about his memoir. I missed the part about why he despises tennis from the start but at around the Middle of his journey to wholeness, he quits drugs and alcohol and commits to tennis for the very first ...
  • Whatcha Got In Them Blue Jeans?

    November 12, 2009

    • I was reading a post asking folks to explain when writing became a passion and how they learned the craft. No surprise... most people started creating works of literature the first time they picked up a pen.Not me... I'm dyslexic. Every word I write is testament to my love of not writing, but learning. Growing up, writing was torture. Mom was a spelling and grammar snob, and her implement of ...

  • Alone

    November 8, 2009

    • Is it me?  I'm I the only writer who likes to be alone. I eat alone. I go to the movies alone. I walk on the beach alone. I shut myself in my house...alone!  People always feel sorry for me and try to intrude on my solitude. They don't understand. I need to rid myself of the worldly noise so my thoughts can flow. When I'm alone, I could write what I want and be who I am without any apologies.
  • Food Obsessions and Me – A blog post from Eric Barnes, writer of the novel Shimmer

    November 5, 2009

    • At some point early on in the marketing of Shimmer, someone at Unbridled, the publisher, asked me to write up a quick blurb about where I like to eat in Memphis. It seemed like a simple request, I'm sure. My response: You of course have no idea how deeply you've stepped into one of the strangest of my habits. I am a person with many particular habits, rituals in a way, each day structured around ...
  • Successful First Day on NaNoWriMo

    November 1, 2009

    •      My first day was a success in this quest for the 50,000 word finish line that sits only 29 days away. I was able to knock out 6097 words today in a Novel I'm calling, "Escaping the Paradox of Justice." Synopsis:     This story features an innocent character who figures out a way to leave the correctional facility where she is being held for a crime she did not commit. ...

  • The Bad, the Bible and Babel

    October 21, 2009

    • God is one rocking muse. Some writer or the other uses religion as allegory, metaphor, reinterpretation. Some religious group or the other is offended. Jose Saramago who won the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature has written a book Cain that has been described as an ironic retelling of the Biblical story of Cain, Adam and Eve's son who killed his younger brother Abel.I assume since he has titled the ...
