Red Room Where the Writers Are

I hate that I am forced to write about Sarah Palin. I hate that I am forced to continue to talk about this so egregiously unqalified, incompetent and dare I say empty-headed individual. Every day it seems like something new has arisen, some further proof that she is so hopelessly daft that her candidacy serves simply to set back the cause of gender equality.

Today my vitriol is reserved for a single topic. It was revealed last week that as Mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin refused to cover the cost of rape kits for victims of sexual assault. Despite repeated requests for change from the police chief and citizens, Palin continued to require women that were raped to pay for the cost of their own rape kit. Imagine being raped, going to the police and then receiving a bill in the mail? As if being raped isn't violation enough?

Why? Why on earth would Sarah Palin refuse to pay for rape kits, even while requesting and receiving a $26,000 truck for her personal use, paid for by city funds? It certainly was not because Wasilla didn't have the money. No, Palin's reasoning for not using PUBLIC funds for rape kits was that they included emergency contraception. You see, Governor Palin is so far to the right of the pro-life movement, she vehemently opposes abortion even in the case of rape or incest.

That anyone could believe something so disgusting as this is one thing. That the person holding those beliefs could possibly be the second most powerful person in the world in a few months, representing all of America to the world and not just her clan of backwards nutjobs, is truly terrifying. Sarah Palin holds the distinction of being the second woman to be on a Presidential ticket but she is the first that obviously hates women.

These neo-conservative Republicans, so publically about small government and freedom, their agenda has become so much clearer over the last few years. They are for smaller government when it means helping people in need. However they have no problem telling you what you can and can't do with your body or who you can and can not marry. It is this hypocrisy that I find most unnerving. I still to this day don't know if they are truly blind to their own belief system or if they are all simply diabolical and evil. I'd like to think the former but with the market collapse, the ongoing wars, and just about everything that comes out of John McCain or Sarah Palin's mouth, not to mention the White House, I just don't know anymore.
