Hotel Cipriani

November 2, 2009, 10:42 am

The varnished, wooden boat with curtained windows pulls up to the dock, and the handsome driver offers me his hand as I step into the boat. “Buon giorno, Signora,” he says, “Please...” and he gestures toward the boat’s empty seats. Sitting in the back with the wind blowing through my hair, I feel like a starlet being whisked away to my secluded Venetian hideaway as the sun sets behind Santa Maria della Salute.

That’s exactly the feel those boats emblazoned with “Hotel Cipriani” in crisp, white lettering on the side are supposed the conjure. Hotel Cipriani, set across the canal from San Marco on Guidecca, is just a boat ride away from the heart of Venice, but its soul is in the glamour of a bygone era.

Thanks, Angela, for reviving some memories

I stayed at the Hotel Cipriani in 1989 and loved it. (Well, you should, shouldn't you?) Magical to look across the canal towards the old city lit up at night and somehow ringing with echoes of Vivaldi whose spirit sums it all up. Attended a concert of his music in the Vivaldi church, Santa Maria della Pieta. Then to sit out on the verandah for breakfast overlooking the lagoon! And Harry's Bar before dinner with the suave pianist, Massimo, from Mestre, who was an Ivor Novello fan. I remember there was an Olympic -size swimming pool which, at that time, was considered unique for a hotel.

But the food was out of this world. I don't know how they contrived it, unless by high-security marinade recipes and such, because it spoiled the palate for three weeks afterwards. I particularly recall the most divine Scotch salmon and fennel such as you'll never savour elsewhere, I am sure. It remains the culinary highlight of my life!

It seems rather sybaritic to reflect on that now, but I'm glad to have had the experience.

Wow!

I'm so glad you had such a lovely stay there! Yes, the huge pool is still unique in Venice. Vivaldi is still being played in the churches. And there's still a fabulous pianist in the bar at the Cipriani -- and he is quite suave!

I hope you have a chance to return someday. Venice is worthy of many, many visits.

Ciao!
