Of mice, muscles and Maloney
The arm and hand continue to improve – I’ve driven into the office today, with no problems. Having the car will make it so much easier to go to my physio appointment last thing this afternoon too. I think she’ll be impressed with how much more I can do since last time. Yesterday I only took one pain relief pill, though I’m sticking to the anti-inflammatories, just in case. Dammit though – it looks like I’ll have to tackle the ironing once more after all.
Meanwhile at work, the boss is unexpectedly off so all the countless things I desperately needed to ask him today will have to keep till tomorrow. And Ruth and I have done a ring-round to cancel his appointments, though it’s still possible he might be able to come in later.
This week’s heroes are: (a) the four surviving WW1 veterans (well done, them – living history indeed); (b) Carol’s umbrella (for saving her from drowning yesterday); and (c) my physiotherapist (for being a real miracle-worker). An eclectic mix, I know, but heck that’s life, eh.
And here’s a poem:
Disconnections
I spend all night
disconnecting myself
from the links
I’ve made in the day
It’s a slow vanishing.
Dark clouds obscure the stars,
the sun a distant memory,
and I don’t recall
the morning.
Unpeel my heart’s cool skin;
set the moorings free.
Ooh, and Ruth has already started Maloney’s Law apparently and tells me that so far it’s the best thing I’ve written. Well, gosh – thanks, Ruth! That’s cheered me greatly. Always better that way round, you know – I’d hate for my first novel to be my best (God forbid).
Today’s nice things:
1. Lord H communing with mice
2. Feeling better
3. The four veterans
4. Poetry
5. Nice comments about Maloney.

Saul Marc Rosenfeld says:
man vs. mouse
I feel your pain Anne, for I too am presently engaged in a frenzied battle of wits with a family of mice that have decided to take over our home. Seeing as how my wife and I actually find them to be cute little critters, we went out and purchased several humane traps that are designed to capture them alive and unharmed- but do THEY appreciate this noble gesture? Hardly! In fact, I believe they regard this as a sign of "weakness" on our part, and it has only managed to enbolden them.
Fortunately, the field of battle has (so far at least!) been confined to the cabinet under our kitchen sink which, one might think, would give my wife and I a fighting chance. Every evening (they are nocturnal creatures- not unlike vampires...) we lay the traps- which are baited with fine quality cheese.
We even make sure to put "reduced fat" cheese in there so as not to raise their cholesterol levels! The traps are cleverly designed to let them in, whereupon the weight of their bodies causes the "door" to shut. Needless to say, they do not appreciate it when this happens, and immediately commence jumping and rattling away in a fruitness (but at least NOT cheeseless) attempt to escape. This always makes quite a racket, and invariably happens right while we're watching a particularly moving, or vital to the plot, scene on TV.
But no matter, for at least we've managed to snare yet another member of this (extended?!) mouse family. Last night we captured #12, and it was my turn to dress warmly, and walk several blocks before releasing it into the wild.
The reason we walk several blocks is because I have a sneaking suspicion that they have the ability to "home", and are simply returning the next day.
And why shouldn't they? They already know full well that my wife and I will not harm them- except for maybe causing them to gain too much weight from being fed so much cheese.
All things considered, they appear to be the rodent equvalent of the Sopranos family- only with decidedly more brains and a tad more class; and I hope you will wish us well in our efforts to ultimately outsmart them.
Now I must go and buy some more cheese- there's a sale on the "reduced-fat" variety, and I can tell that they are clamoring for more...
