It's Hard Out Here for a Writer

I haven't written much this year because I've been reeling from my broke state. It's a challenge to live while surviving. I'm not throwing a pity party. A lot of people are struggling. I have to count my blessings. I just didn't expect to be in this place at this time. I didn't grow up with money. But, it was normal back then to just have the basics and to hear, "Wait ...

SF's Yo' Mama's So Literary

I won SF's Literary Death Match, Friday before last. The competition was really stiff. We were all champions! The audience and the judges and the promoters were all fantastic. It came down to a literary smack down. I felt scared and excited at the same time. Like a virgin. Read all about it at www.literarydeathmatch.comSingle Woman of a Certain Age, an anthology edited by Jane ...

I Love Obama but I'm Broke and I have a Cold

I haven't blogged for a long time. I was ecstatic about the presidential election results. Obama's Inauguration was surreal for me. My blood pressure plunged twenty points. It was actually below normal. The nurse at Kaiser was astounded and so was I. But, I attributed the improvement to having just witnessed the swearing in of the first African American president. Fast ...

Proposition 8!

I can't think of another issue that has pulled me in different directions like Proposition 8. Let me be clear. I voted against Proposition 8 without hesitation. Some of my friends seem to live in a rock solid, No on 8, pro same sex marriage world. These friends also have the tendency to be white. I have other friends who say things like, "The kids(gays and lesbians) just won't ...

Change!

Earlier this year I was advised to keep my blog personal and not to get political. Well, the personal is about to get political. I'm still pinching myself regarding Obama's victory! I will say more at a later date. But, like many people I'm still recovering from the shock of experiencing something that I didn't expect to witness during my lifetime let alone my parents. So, I'm still ...

Girl Kissing

My friend, Paula and I giggled like school girls as we huddled over little plates of dim sum goodies. We were celebrating another of my forty plus birthdays in a large, sunny, crowded restaurant in Oakland's Chinatown. Women in white uniforms pushed metal carts topped with steaming morsels through the narrow aisles. During our conversation thus far, Paula had casually thrown in an ...

Too Good to be Black

I received an e-mail at my AOL address from a reader in La Jolla. She took exception to my blog airing the fact that a mouse or rat had entered into my bathroom cabinet underneath the sink. I felt that there was a stigma attached to having rodents. And as a black person, I felt sensitive about telling my agent about it during a phone call. Well, I was informed that LaJolla has rats in the ...

What do You Want Me to Blog About Next?

Do you want to read an update on my rat problem? Or, would you prefer to hear my take on the political scene? Do you want to learn about my latest encounter with subtle, possible prejudice? Or, would you like to hear about my trip to hot, humid, stormy, Chicago last week to visit my warm, extended family? Or, how about the time I read with other authors at a nudist camp on a ...

Not Without Laughter

I was walking down the street with a friend's four year old son on a recent evening. A somewhat large man lumbered past us. ( I almost typed "shuffled," but I censored myself). The boy asked in a loud voice, "Was that a monster?" I was speechless. I'm pretty sure that the guy heard him. I felt sympathy for the man. He was black and I wondered if that made the ...
