Help Out A Future President
Kamala Harris is going to be president. I promise you. And when she's inaugurated you can be damn sure I'll be sitting on that podium, whether Feinstein likes it or not. But before that, she's got to be elected attorney general.
Harris is the first woman District Attorney in San Francisco's history, and as the first African American woman in California to hold the office. In office she's not only lowered crime, but done it with sensitivity to the community, to victims, and to offenders. It says a lot that a former public defender like me is completely enamored with her.
To that end, I'm hosting a fundraiser, and co-hosting another. I'd like to invite you to join Michael and me and Jon and Dorine Streeter at 3 PM on Sunday March 8. We'll be celebrating Kamala and eating truly inspired food. Email me for details.
Also, on Tuesday March 31st at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco we'll be throwing a Kamala Harris spring fling. Beer bongs, wet T-shirt contests, etc. I'M KIDDING. It will be tasteful and restrained, but surely a reasonable amount of fun. Email me about this one, too. If you come I'm betting that you can basically guarantee that in a dozen years time you won't be relegated to the Purple Tunnel of Doom.
Rachel Maddow will be in the Bay Area to keep Mother Jones afloat. With the imminent demise of newspapers, periodicals like Mother Jones will the only source for decent investigative reporting. If you want to get your news from someone other than Gawker (a website I've hated ever since they voted Michael and me third most loathsome literary couple. I mean, come on. Surely we're more vile than Jonathan Safran Foer and Nicole Krauss? And we can definitely kick Heidi Julavits and Ben Marcus's asses. They're positively sweet.) you'd be well advised to come to the Yerba Buena Arts Center at 8 PM on March 28th. For tickets and information, email lasdal@motherjones.com.
826 Valencia is doing a food writing seminar for grown ups on February 25th from 6 to 9. If, having been laid off from your hedge fund, you want to make a career out of your chocolate habit or bacon obsession, you should go to this and learn from the best. (Michael Pollan!!) Go here for details.
And finally, and surely least interestingly, I'll be appearing at Congregation Beth Shalom on Sunday, March 1 2-4 p.m. 301 14th Avenue @ Clement Street, in San Francisco. The event is free and open to the public and complimentary childcare is available.
In addition to nattering on about my forthcoming book Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace, I'll give a talk and answer audience questions.
