An Alaskan's Search

June 21, 2008

Dear RR authors--

I'm sure you are familiar with Eric Nichol's quirky, hilarious rap from Alaska. He is looking for an agent to represent his current project, "Steel Stonehenge." My agent does not work with his genre, which falls more in the science fiction category (and then some). Eric can explain it better himself. Please consider introducing him to your agent.

The last time someone made a request for agent recommendation, no one ponied up with contacts. I think RR can do better than to greet a fellow writer with silence.

Please lend a hand!

Eric's email is: k17aj@acsalaska.net

Belle,

Your charitible magnanimity has me teary-eyed. Run for the California governorship and you'll have my vote.

Gerard Jones says:

This is so good of you, Belle.

We tend to have such an isolating profession, it's a great gift when writers help each other make contacts. I'm in the process of changing agents myself right now, but I'll bet I can come up with a suggestion or two for Eric...

I am all for this

Once I had a teacher, a very famous writer teacher, and she gave out her agent's number as if it were water (maybe with the current drought issues, this is not the best analogy).  Anyway, she said, "It's her job to see what she wants."

I ended up sending my novel to this agent, and she was very nice, and she turned it down.

What seems very useful is to make sure agents work with what is sent.  My agent does two very specific niche types of work, and I really make sure people fit into the niches before even recommending in general.

But writers usually have a very few number of "referrals."  I feel I have five with my agent, and I've already used up four of them.  My agent took NONE of the work I recommended.

And I thought I had the niche down.

My agent isn't taking new clients at this time, and I'll write to let Eric know. I'll also suggest he explore the many smaller presses that might be interested in his work and not require an agent.

(later) -- FYI Belle, sent an email to the address you have above and it was returned.

Eric, I see your favorite author is King Solomon.  Are you a scholar of the Hebrew Bible?  If so, I can introduce you to my publisher, Stuart Matlins, who might be interested if your passion/credentials relate to this area of expertise.

I have to admit I'm a relative newbie to the book business.  John Ingram had the unenviable task of introducing me to it, even had one of his managers go into more details.  I still don't get it completely.

From a practical businessman's point of view, I think the book business is ripe for an overhaul.

Eric Nichols says:

Thank you, Belle

and all who have responded. :) I am certainly up for any suggestions. As a bit of backgound information, my former agent did a fine job for me with my first book, but he has left the agenting business entirely so he could race Porsches in Switzerland, so now I am sort of starting from scratch. My work is best described as scientific fiction....as opposed to science fiction....the main difference being that all the science involved in my work actually exists...and the story lines actually take place a decade or two in the past.

(For Thomas.....though I consider myself an Old Testament student, I'm far from being a scholar or an authority. I do make many references in my literature, however. :) )

I have posted my most representative work on my member site, as Belle has mentioned. Perhaps this is the best way to explain "where my head is at"...and why I don't fit neatly into most conventional genres.

Again..thank you one and all...I am looking forward to great things!

Eric

Try this link to start your research

Belle,

Thanks for posting this you are always so willing to help new writers. That’s definitely the type of community we want to encourage at Red Room.

I wanted to chime in and let everyone know that we are working on special pages for agents and publishers. Additionally we're trying our best to encourage agents and publishers to Join Red Room even before we have customized pages ready for them.

We are also building functionality so that writers can indicate if they are “looking for an agent” or “looking for a publisher” on their Red Room profile.

I would love to hear suggestions from all of you, regarding features or improvements we could make that you think would help you in your writing career. Please send them to me at support@redroom.com

In the meantime I’m providing a link to a list of published Science Fiction authors currently on Red Room. I would suggest that Eric browse through this list as many of these writers are published by reputable Sci-Fi focused publishers. (Just click on any of the author’s books and scroll to the publisher section. In many cases you can just click on the link and be directed to the Publishers homepage.)

Here’s the link: Science Fiction Writers on Red Room

Hopefully this will be a good resource for Eric to start. A few of these authors have also listed contact information for their agents perhaps that will be of help as well.

I also wanted to take this time to congratulate Eric on being our first featured “Aspiring Author” on our newly created Member Landing Page. Stay tuned as even more new and exciting changes are coming soon.

Dear Thomas

Thanks for these wonderful new features...I will definitely explore them . And what an honor to be the first on the Aspiring Author section! I'm always game for taking the first crack at something...:)

Again...thanks to everyone. I will certainly pass on the favor to the next one...if I can't pay it back somehow.
