Doodles
Jessica Inclan, fellow redroom.com author, bakes muffins when not writing. I paint or doodle. This below is dedicated to friends Ben Fong-Torres and Jane Ganahl (who interviewed rock stars when she was a journalist at theSF Chronicle). There was a time when I wanted to be a second James Thurber or Shel Silverstein. LOL. I was listening to essays on the subject of "Contentment" on BBC Radio 3. Contentment for one man was playing the ukulele and so this cartoon and poem in iambic meter was born when I could not sleep from imbibing too much gunpowder tea.

The Fabulous All-Flea Band
Miss Kitti Li of Waikiki,
Returns by popular demand.
Predictably she will emcee,
The Fabulous all-Flea Band.
Oh, gee, we hear it’s for free!
It's a guaranteed jubilee.
They’re sure to play the Dixieland
On tympani and ukulele
So come all ye, and see first hand
The wondrous, wee, jumping three.
*in Hawaiian ukulele means jumping flea because the fingers on the fret move so fast they look like jumping fleas

Belle Yang says:
My Pet Crab
When I was a child in Taiwan, my mom would catch freshwater crab and tie a string to one of its legs and let me walk him. I would make sure to return the crab safely to his mountain rivulet at the end of play. People ask me, "Belle, what did you do with your biology degree?" Answer: "I put my beloved animals in my cartoons and children's books." My next kid's book is titled, "Foo the Flying Frog of Washtub Pond."
My Pet Crab
My pet is a freshwater crab.
I walk him on a string always.
He fled a biology lab,
Scampering down the hallways.
Do you think it’s terribly drab,
He insists on walking sideways?

I love your doodles! I think we have second careers right at our fingertips. Doodles and Muffins (sounds like a coffee shop to me!).

The Flea and We
Belle, Apparently we ae closer related than I thought. You mentioned Ben Fong-Torres. Well, Shirley Fong-Torres, his sister, is a long time friend of ours who always introduces Barbara and I (me) as her cousins when we go out for dinner in San Francisco. Love Miss Kitti.
Best, Ray A. March
