I will fight for the poor and the needy but not for the insurance companies nor PhRMA.  I will do what I can to improve on Baucus' "ripoff."
Joy Skeel Medical Ethicist

The Gang of Six Bill is a total wash and conceeds to the Health Insurance Industry.  The far right fringe has been vocal, garnering the impression that there are far more in opposition to the public option than their true numbers.

Call the White House (202) 456-1414, during the hours of 9 AM to 5 PM Eastern Time.  This is their comment line.  Leave our president a message that the public option is absolutely necessary for real reform.  We need it now, not a bogus trigger option that will push this urgent, moral issue off the table for several decades.

Gouache, "Big Fish Eat the Little" 1993

It will cost you nothing to call.  Just 3 minutes of your time!

Please ask your friends to do the same.

Sincerely,

Belle Yang

PS--I am not in the habit of leaving political messages in Redroom.com, but I feel the special interests are metastasizing, and our votes may soon be of no consequence.  The next fight will be over the energy bill.  If we cannot fight big business, we will no longer have a governable nation.  We will no longer exist as a republic.  Remember as children, we pledged allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.  And to the republic for which it stands . . . .

Please call if you can, Waldo

It makes a stronger impact at this particular point in time.  Thank you for all you've done.  I don't understand the lethargy on the part of many people.  It's not as if we are talking about an issue limited to a small percentage of the population.  If you have insurance now, what about your kids and grandkids, who may see their wages eaten up by huge premiums?  And it's not just about the health insurance reform, but fight back against the giants who threaten to make our individual votes inconsequential.

Finally

It is about time someone called this health reform for what it is. I was actually surprised the left allowed their voices to be quashed. I agree that REAL reform is needed. Otherwise this will just be another AIG-style bailout. Bravo on the good blog.

Dear Joshua

I see you are in the East.  More expats care about what's going on inside the country than those currently residing here.  Very odd.  I have a friend in Australia, who has been following the health insurance reform debate, but when I write about it in Facebook, I get few responses.

I've seen good causes die, because those who oppose it--a minority--came out to vocalize their opposition.  Those who wanted the proposed changes merely sat silently, waiting for the project to get done.  Surprise, surprise, the minority got their way.  Sigh.

Joshua Keidan says:

Well I can understand

I can understand why people don't talk about it much on facebook. I actually used to do politcal discussion on facebook and then i realized it sometimes what started as a debate over health care got very personal. Which is why this is actually nice.

Belle Yang says:

Actually,

I've started to receive really encouraging emails from friends about my persistence and my passion. A handful have stepped up to tell me that they appreciate my reminders to step up to the plate and make those calls. I've only gotten into one "fight," but we remain friends.  This from a classmate today:

Thanks for posting important updates on health care and other issues. I usually turn to FB to find out what scores people I hardly know are getting on video games I've never played or how Lloyd's sisters are doing on their diets, but YOU provide that constant reminder that the time to step up and do something is now. (I signed the petition.) Gracias.

Joshua Keidan says:

sadly

Sadly my facebook discussions denegrated quite quickly. I think with my friends it is bit of an emotional issue.
But I would say most likely we are on the opposite side of politics but still you and I both agree that things need to be fixed, and not only by putting a band aid over it like the senate is proposing but a big overhaul that would involve making the pharmas and hospitals ...oh what is that word were ...begins with an r....ah responsible.

author of the Haunted Ballad series, the Kinkaid Chronicles, five standalone novels, numerous short fiction and essays, and a lot of snippy opinions.

And we've spoken - in my Red Room blog - just today, where I finally threw in the towel, after the House of Representatives, led by my rep (Nancy Pelosi), allowed the passage of a bill that won't allow a penny of the so-called public option to be used for abortion. Apparently, women are not part of the public.

The single most constantly used word of the past two or so years in this country has been "change". Someone wake me when something actually changes. Until then, as Phil Ochs said, I aint marching anymore.

I'm out of energy, and out of hope.

Hope and Change

Sure there was change...change in our pockets..that is what will be left now that the gov't option costs more than the normal insurance...
