August Doldrums

August 18, 2008, 8:03 am

I seem to have lost momentum,  after the big push to get the corrected page proofs for Accordion Dreams back to my publisher last month.  Or maybe it was the week long vacation  that followed.  Late July is not the time for a trip to Florida, but we were overdue for a visit with both sets of in-laws (conveniently located on opposite coasts.)   A pretty good visit, but oddly ennervating.

Since I was away from home (and my computer) during the change from July to August, I lost track of the promised "monthly contest."   Matthew Biberman and Eric Nichols tied for the last one. (Thanks,  guys!  Hope you like the CD!) Guess I'll wait until September to figure out the next installment.

It's a strange thing,  waiting for a first  book to appear.  It seems like such a long way off.  Not till January, in my case.  But it  turns out there is plenty to do, in preparing for launching my "baby."   Every step of the process fascinates me, and it's exciting, because it's all so new.

Good things are happening, for sure.  The official launch event is set for January 23 at The Booksmith, a great indie store  in SF.   A couple of other events are in the works.  My band's first post-publication gig (at Ashkenaz in Berkeley) will also be a book party.  Next month, we're playing for the annual trade show of the NCIBA, the local independent booksellers association.  And yesterday I got my first request from Louisiana to do a book event.

Just one problem: It's not writing.

So it's time to get back in the saddle and write something new.  I have a couple of projects I'd started, then set aside when I had to do final edits.  Fortunately, I'm in a writing group, so I can't put it off forever.  I agreed to submit something for our next meeting.  A week from tomorrow!  Wish me luck...

Alas........

It can be discouraging indeed to realize how much of a writer's life is "not writing."  My best friend and mentor "Mikey," who could, in all good conscience, sell his own grandmother a loaded cigar, unceasingly castigates me for not dedicating my life to SELLING my literary wares.  If I DID dedicate my life to that, I'd never get any writing done.  That's what AGENTS are for.  At least in theory.

 Now you know. :)

 Eric

P.S.  Thoroughly enjoying your CD.....been showing it to some o' me musical cohorts.  :)   Thanks again!

Thanks, Eric!   (As our guitarist said, upon first listening to that CD:  Well, it definitely sounds like us!)

Yes, there is writing. And selling.  (And then the day job, at least for most of us!)

Trouble with a lot of the promotion stuff is that it does involve writing, of a certain kind.  Writing copy for an good author website takes thought and skill.  So does writing a good blog entry.  Sending e-mails...well, sort of.  So you can get lulled into thinking it's all connected.  It's all using words to communicate, right?

Yes and no.  After awhile these other activities become avoidance!

 I should know.

Hear you on not writing

Right now I am writing but not the writing I want to do. Only in my dreams do I have an agent and a publicist. Alas, I have just my pen and a blog. One has to wonder how people promoted before the advent of the internet...hmm. Maybe I will study the early pheonoms and their path to promotion pre-internet age. That or can back to writiing my next novel. Grrr!

By the way, Blair is your band's CD on the internet? Like a myspace page or somewhere where I can hear a sample? Would love to hear a bit of cajun music. I have a wonderful CD of Zydeco music with various artists that lifts my spirits when I'm down.  (My father brought it back from New Orleans)

Listening to Sauce Piquante

Thanks for asking about our music, Gabriella (#1 or #2 ?  :-)

To  hear partial tracks from the one I sent Eric, just follow the link on this page where it says "Sauce Piquante Live...."  That takes you to the page on CD Baby (an internet CD sales site) where you can listen to samples.  (And, of course, purchase the CD if you care to.  But not required!)  Then there is a track (Jolie Bassette) from a newer recording, not yet released, if you go to my "media" section on this site.

What is the zydeco CD you have?

We just had an amazing jam session at our house last week, where a local musician friend brought his cousin--and the cousin's entire zydeco band, in town from Louisiana to play some gigs.  Roy Carrier and the Night Rockers.  Pretty cool night.  Went to work on less than 4 hours of sleep the next day....

and working on my syllabi (sigh) but the music is rockin'.

And I got to go to SF for the MLA convention in late December. Maybe Sauce Piquante will be playing a gig. With 7000 english profs in town, you should think about it...

Thanks, Matthew!

Wow, that boggles the mind, 700 English profs in town!

Guess I could consider the annual meeting of regional booksellers kind of a warm-up :-)     Do they need any music?
