Book Signing with Accordion: Ashkenaz tonight, after a good time at Clayton Books

February 10, 2009, 7:54 am

I had my second book signing on Sunday.  Just like the first one, at Booksmith in San Francisco, it was a wonderful experience.  Once again, so much of the credit goes to the events coordinator.  The lovely and gracious Vinitha put me at ease and completely charmed my mother, who came along with us.  (So I had an added reason to be anxious!) The crowd was interested and attentive.  A woman in the audience even came up and played guitar with us, before she headed off to her banjo lesson. I think it helps to have an accordion in hand.  It helps me, at least. Tonight at Ashkenaz, it will be a different kind of event.  Instead of weaving a little music into the reading, we'll have a whole lot of music--and with the full band, instead of just the Blair-and-Steve duo.  After a short reading, it will be the usual Sauce Piquante concert and dance.  Berkeley bookseller Mrs. Dalloways will be onsite.  I'm looking forward to it.  But it's funny, the prospect of doing an unvarnished talk and reading, with the music saved for later, now seems strange  to me.  Or maybe it's just that the accordion is my security blanket.  Like this whole journey, it will be an adventure. If any Red Roomers happen to be there, please come up and say hello.  I'm the one wearing the red accordion.
