Reading at a music club: last week's book release party for Accordion Dreams at Ashkenaz in Berkeley
A very interesting experience, doing a book reading at a music club. Especially when it's just before your band plays. I wondered if people would stop to listen. Or if it would feel odd, being in two different roles, band leader and very new author. Or if I'd feel so drained after the reading, it would be hard to face a three hour Sauce Piquante gig. At first, it did feel odd. This was my first reading for Accordion Dreams that was just that: a reading and book talk, without any music woven in. I figured with a whole evening of music to follow, there wasn't much point. We did start out with one tune, just an accordion-fiddle duo, but then it was just me and the book. No place to hide. I also got a little rattled when a couple of people were talking loudly, over by the bar (till a friend asked them to stop!) But otherwise, the crowd was attentive. And bigger than I've had so far in a bookstore, about 40 people came early, for the reading. I knew a lot of them. But surprise: I really enjoyed it! It was like preaching to the choir. After awhile, I forgot about reading and just told stories. A friend took photos. I seem to be very animated when I read! Rather disconcerting, like one of those storyteller people. So I think I'll post a photo where I look a little calmer: ...Oh well, photo is too big. I'll have to try again later. After the reading, I felt energized. Lots more people showed up to hear the band (in other words, the numbers doubled when I put down the book and picked up the accordion! Oh well, can't dance to a book !)
