Hit the Fan
Faithful readers will recall the laugh we shared when my editor at The Comics Journal informed me that my upcoming interview of legendary underground cartoonist S. Clay Wilson had been credited ("inexplicably") by the Table of Contents to Michael Benson.
So yesterday an agitated Wilson called to report that his fellow ZAP contributor Robert Williams, having somehow scored an advance copy, was livid because of a story Wilson had related involving him and the critic Robert Hughes. "I don’t remember telling you any story," Wilson said.
"It was early," I said. You hadn’t even had much to drink. You even said Williams wasn’t going to like it, but what the hell... It was funny."
Wilson began to read the interview aloud, including my introductory text.
"Skip to the questions," I said. "After the one about your hip."
"Well, I guess I said it," he said. "I shouldn’t give interviews when I’m drunk. No. I should only give interviews when I’m drunk. It’s still a funny story."
"Blame it on your treacherous interviewer," I said.
"I did," Wilson said. "And he checked the Table of Contents and saw Benson Hedges or some such shit."
"Warn Benson," I e-mailed my editor, "Robert Williams is looking for him."
"See how I protect you," he said.
