Selling the Signed

August 6, 2008, 7:54 am

Jessica Inclan's entry -- truly a nice thought with which to begin the day -- led me to start this as a "Comment." Then, I thought, "Hey, I haven't blogged in a while. Maybe I shouldn't let the opportunity pass."

Anyway, I don't have a lot of writer friends, so their works aren't really crowding my shelves, but I have a couple whose books I bought who DIDN'T BUY MINE. (I keep a scorecard in my head.) I have thought of selling their books, perhaps with the signed page snipped out, or, better yet, perhaps after simply razor-blading out my name and my wife's. That way they wouldn't know which of their friends had cashed them in and would lie awake nights pondering this treachery.

On a related note, when coming across one of my unsigned works in a used book store, I have been known to sign it with an inscription on the order of, "Help! I am being held prisoner in Moe's. Please give me a good home."

Ultimately, Bob,

we need to forgive.  Hard to do, but true.  And trust me, your book is living quite happily in my bookshelf, not three feet from me.  Yes, still unread, but I'm working my way to it ever so slowly this summer.

"Forgiveness," what a concept!  I've been trying to keep that thought front and center.  It was there during my morning meditation -- but it has a lot of grudges to knock out of the way.  When I get to the office, it will have it's real test.

And I'm about 3/4 done your book and will respond one-on-one when I've finished.  It's definitely held my interest, though I'm sure Miranda and Sariel will make it through.  If not, I'll really be bummed.
