Matthew, thanks for your comment. My essay is purely personal. I am fascinated by the subject of suicide since my mother was suicidal and several times almost suceeded in killing herself. For years I was a commited Freudian. Wrote two books of psychoanalytic cricticism, one on Yeats, one on Blake. Right now I feel that psychoanalysis is on the way out. There are so many cheaper and shorter methods now days. And after many years of thinking about it,  I've concluded that analysis though it could be enriching to the subject, really doesn't work very well as therapy. I go on at possibly tedious length about this in my memoir, The Last Good Freudian. My new novel deals with the quirks and flaws of personality that were reflected in the theories of the pioneers with sometimes dire results. The whole subject is endlessly interesting as I'm sure you found in your teaching.
