where the writers are

Brian Shawver I write novels that are very hard for me to describe--I'm going to work on this.

Ideas for Novels, Part II

January 7, 2008, 1:14 pm

Last time I mentioned that people often give me ideas for books, and while that's true, for some reason I can't remember any besides the one I got from my tax consultant. But staying on that topic, I think it's interesting that people assume getting ideas must be a big part of writing--so difficult that we're always on the lookout for good ideas. It seems to me that coming up with  ideas is actually a pretty small part of writing books. You really only have to think up an idea once every two years or so. It should be a good one, of course, but once you get a good one you then have a long time before you need another. It's like the way snakes eat--one big rabbit will take a pretty long time to digest. I don't know why both my blog entries have mentioned snakes, by the way.
