BALLIN' ON A WHOLE NOTHA LEVEL!

September 11, 2008, 10:58 am

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the African American Literacy Expo, in Tulsa, OK. This fine event, in honor of Zora Neale Hurston, was hosted by Sisters Sippin Tea, Real Page Turners, Tag Team Marketing, The Tulsa Library Trust and the African-American Resource Center.
To simply state that I enjoyed myself would be an understatement. Not quite two years ago I occupied a prison cell with another individual that was being forced to pay his debt to society. However, on the 31st of May I shared a stage with the peers of my new Hustle. To my right and left sat men and women that share, not only the same passion as I do for writing, but the vision of getting our children to read.
As I watched calendar year after calendar year pass, one thing that never changed was my want of the best and most prestigious things that Man cherishes. However, I knew that anotha prison stint would be immenient if I chose to use the same means that I had before, and been unsuccessful with. So, after a 6+ year prison term I stepped back into my natural habitat with two complete manuscripts and a goal of starting my own publishing company.
Grown Man Publishing, LLC manifested from a thought to an entity November of 2006 and our first publication was delivered to our home office in October of 2007. When I held my first book, that had been published by my publishing company I felt like a real Boss! Now, having done a couple of book signings, and traveled for an event in my field, I know what Ballin' really is. Making moves for a cause and not only finacial gain is really A Whole Notha Level Of Ballin'!
