Alexandra Township: A Photo Essay
I grew up less than a mile from what is now regarded as an "informal settlement" -- Alexandra Township. The striking difference between the lavish homes surrounded by high electrified walls remain in stark contrast to the poverty in Alex. The ANC has got to do something about Alexandra Township. A relic of Apartheid, to some extent it seems stuck in a time warp. Although there is electricity now, and efforts at urban renewal have been made, the lack of parks, communal spaces and facilities that allow communities to thrive, along with a dearth of food, shelter, toys and clothes, is horrifying. Yet, despite her troubled past, there is still something magical and unique about this place, steeped as it is in history. The colours are more vivid somehow, and the people are gracious and generous with the little they have. Courageous men like Linda Twala and the amazing kid he mentors, Sthembelo Radebe (aka Warren), who wrote in my notebook, "Hope in thee," have convinced me that there is still much I can do, even from abroad.
