Nail Biting , the story of the century

November 5, 2008, 9:17 am

My cousin's 'pretty' nails . Now you can see why she was mad !

“Oh my God!” she shrieked. “Oh my God!” she yelled. “What have you done to your nails?” she said in a seriously nervous tone after i hugged her. Lynn is one of my favorite cousins , and although i don’t like girly girls some how we two get along.

“ What? What? they’re fine!” i exclaimed in a settled relaxed tone. My eyes were closing by them self, the four hours of sleep i got last night were not paying off well .

“FINE??? FINE??? FINE is like being on a trip and somewhat bored... fine is like going out and not having fun... BUT this .. THIS is NOT fine!!!  Actually this is so far from fine that fine seems like a tiny point on a semi disappeared line!!!” she screamed. i had just came back from school and i SO did not need this!!.

“ yeah it’s a bad habit ...i bite my nails when I'm nervous and .....mmm” my eyes looked up and to the left , my creative side wasn’t working so i used the old excuse. “ we had a big exam today” i  managed to say without looking directly into her eyes .

“ EXAM OR NO EXAM NAILS SHOULD NOT BE CHOPPED OFF LIKE THIS!!” she said in an even higher tone this time .

“ GOD , RELAX it sounds as if you’re mad at me for bitting your own nails” i said trying to stand my case.

“ well , but your my cousin and i care about you!” she said in a lower tone this time.

“OK! its a bad habit and i will try to stop.!” i said. she looked at me with a doubtful stare. “I PROMIS!” I screeched. Finally her breathing was back to normal.... her eyeballs fell back into their sockets... she stopped shaking .i went through the narrow hallway to reach a heavy large brown door. after  fixing the tilted golden plate saying “Rim Abdulghani- head president” i walked in. Dropping my heavy bag on the wooden floor caused a sudden bang which made my mom look up for a quarter of a second.

“OH HI!!” she said in a surprised tone- although i pass by her office every day after school.

“ yes but 15 meters just won’t do ...” i heard the voice on the phone babble.

“ how was your test ?” she whispered while muting the phone with her hand . how was your test a simple question yet ti couldn't find a decent answer ... horrible , unprepared for .. hmm not quit what she would want to hear.

“ Great ..” i finally managed to say “ JUST perfect!”. my life was suddenly put on slow motion with each step to the couch - which then looked like heaven - my soaring muscles , my clenched neck, my crammed up legs ... all at the same time. pshhhhhh i could feel my bones sinking into the black leather couch. “ ahhhh heaven...” i mumbled.   i had had  a long tiring exam day staring at that new times roman text , font 12 for more than three hours  and an hour on my mom’s couch was all needed .  and just when i got to relax and drift off to a tropical island ... while i was laying on the warm fuzzy sand ... with the wind blowing in my hair and the sprinkles of water spraying over me.... and the lov--

“ do you know what your daughter did to her nails??” an annoying voice echoed in  my head .. for a second there i thought i was dreaming ... unfortunately... I wasn’t  ! My cousin has once again excelled at being the source of annoyance. I tried to pretend to look as if i was sleeping in peace but sadly  i was never a good liar nor a good actor ( I'm guessing thats why I was never casted in any schools plays). even though i was sure  they knew that i was  awake there was no harm ignoring them..  until..  the light that  once made me squint my eyes has been blocked.... i slowly opened my eyes  .. i saw my cousin standing right on top of my head , her eyes opened up like never before ... her eye lids were touching her eyebrows.. I then dared to glance over to my mom who was finally off the phone, she had a peaceful smile on her face

“ SHE IS SO ANNOYING” she mouthed. i nodded. sadly my cousin was still there

“HELLO.... SO YOU like better not bite your nails again” she warned. there was a long silence as we glared at each other.

“ OK I PROMISE” i snapped . i then angrily dragged my heavy body through the room. i slammed the door behind me and kept walking. i walked and walked and walked and walked the anger was slowly fading. where was i walking to ? no idea all i knew and cared about then was that where ever i was heading to was near the streets  ... i got to thinking why is she so obsessed with nails? why is she always angry when she sees my nails chopped off? why... a lot of teenagers bite their nails... many of them have chopped off nails... I'm just one of many many teens! but why do people bite their nails ...Nervousness was one of many reasons but for many it was the main one. although this was not the first time i got scolded by someone for bitting my nails this is what actually ticked me off. suddenly i looked around to see that the once pink-purple sunset sky was turning dark. where could she be by now ? she had to be home .as  I stood out side the door almost out of breath after ringing the bell i could hear my mom scream “ I'm coming !” . she opened the door , she was a mess , she had one shoe on and the other one off . she was wearing an apron and i could even smell the burnt up cookies she was trying to cook. although i knew my mom couldn't care less if i bit m nails or not i hugged her tightly and squealed “ i promise i will never bite my nails again.”
