To Nap Perchance to Write Again.....

February 27, 2008

Power Nap

I stare at the blank document, knowing that I want to fill it with something. The thoughts are there. My eyes are weary from staring at the screen. Extraneous thoughts pop into my head but still that opening sentence is elusive. It's not quite writer's block but something else, something for which I have no name. That's when I know that I need to walk away from the computer, to gain some perspective.

I look at my cat, napping peacefully and think that she may hold the secret. Not enough sleep. Not enough real rest. Cats are good at that. If napping were an Olympic event, Aimee would win the gold. She purposefully marches off each day to find a comfy place for a power nap and then she's ready to attack life again.

I've never been good at it but maybe, just maybe, I just need to learn to nap.

Embracing Distance

I have also experienced that weird elusive feeling of writing the first sentence. For some reason it seems like the first sentence is always the hardest…like when you start running the first quarter mile is the rough part. After that, you may be tired but it just doesn’t seem quite as hard. Sometimes I’m able to push past that rough spot, but sometimes the more I push, the more stuck I get. When that happens I know I need to step back, pull away—get some perspective! The only problem is that sometimes stepping back is just as difficult as diving right in—I think we can all learn a little from your cat in that regard—when it’s time to nap, it is time to nap.
