I read somewhere, perhaps it was in Stephen King's On Writing, the question "if you can write, why do anything else?"  While I am not a fan of horror, I am a professional fan of Stephen King and I have really enjoyed several of his non-horror stuff (Hearts in Atlantis and On Writing come to mind off the top of my head).

I would suspect that many people feel this way.  Particularly people who are really good at what they do.    I would suspect that people who sing or dance or write programs or paint or rope cattle feel that if you can do that well, then why do anything else.  

 I don't feel that way.  I think there is a place for such specialization, don't get me wrong.  However, I don't think I will ever be a specialist.  I like too many things to pick just one.  I am very good at several things, and adequate at several others.  I have other interests that I want to find out if I will be good at.  I have things that I might not be good at, but that I enjoy doing.  For example, I enjoy riding a bike.   However, I'll never be "good" at it - at least not in that Lance Armstrong Tour de France sort of way.  I own a commuter bike.  It looks like this (except I added a water bottle):

I bought it last summer and rode it to work a couple times a week.  Right now I work out of my home, so I don't have a commute and I am not the type to just go riding like I did when I was a kid.

 I play chess.  I am, by all accounts, the one of the best of the worse.  This means that if you take those that play chess and you break them up into small enough groups, I would fall in the lowest group, but I would be at the top of that list.  I have played in the Bluegrass State Games several times and have won trophies in this category.  

With nine books on techngology, a Masters, and 25 years of experience, I would say I am a techologist.  However, 9 years of that I have been in a management role - first line manager, director, business owner.  So, I am also a technologist, manager, and writer.

 I like art and I like to draw.  Again, I'll win no awards, but if I draw something, people recognize it for what I have attempted to draw.  I find it interesting to figure out life and to put it on paper.  This is also what draws me to physics.  I regularly "attend" class at MIT by going to Physics class under the excellent guidance of Professor Walter Lewin where I am currently studying electricity and magnetism.

 I guess for me, if you can experience and be active with more of life, why not do it?
