I started my morning on a trek through the Fahakatchee Strand in the Florida Everglades in search of the ghost orchid. I slogged through the water infested with snakes, alligators and unknown creatures. I watched the canopy for woodpeckers and owls and multiple species of orchids, the ghost orchid in particular. My walk was accompanied by exotic and soothing flute music drifting in the background while my intellect was challenged by the botonists naming each little chameleon, mushroom, and flower with scientific nomenclature. The seasons even changed from dry to torrents of rain.
My walk was right here, in front of my 22 inch computer screen, watching a new and breathtaking dvd produced by Karen LaBonte, Reenie Page, Stig Dalstrom and Darryl Saffer entitled, "Sig Dalstrom Wild Orchid Man in the Ghost Orchid Swamp." No, it's not exciting in the modern adventure sense; instead, it is a leisurely walk just like I enjoy myself that touches the soul while accidently teaching a bit about the flora and fauna that populate the tropical Everglades of Florida.
The leisurely pace of the dvd provides ample opportunity for the novice to gain appreciation and understanding about the mysteries of the swamp that are part of the life force that renews the spirit. The dvd ends in my own favorite refuge, the Corkscrew Swamp Audubon Sanctuary, the home of the Ghost Orchid that inspired my own Ghost Orchid novel.
