My beautiful friend and most exquisite writer, Megan Kruse, has asked for my help in publicizing Cutbank's online literary competition. She is in her second (last) year in the MFA program at Missoula, Mt. and is now an online editor for the journal. It's a classy publication. Link below. http://www.cutbankonline.org/

ORLO/The Bear Deluxe, a very classy environmental organization/art and literary magazine, is hosting readings at Wordstock on Saturday and Sunday, October 10th and 11th, in Portland, OR. They've invited me to read on their stage on Sunday at 3:30. I've contributed book reviews and flash fiction to their magazine. Also appearing are Gina Ochsner, Paulann Peterson, Walt Curtis, Brian ...

In case any of you believe that I've been kidnapped by facebook, quit writing, or ran away to live on the beach in Moorea (although that's always a possibility), let me update you that I've been busy writing. Today an essay of mine was accepted by the NYTimes. I'll keep you all posted on the publication date. It will not be in MODERN LOVE. It will be in the science/health section. One ...

Clinton Global Initiative

I'm away from my patients for ten days - working toward a deadline for an essay on animal intelligence that I'm both anxious to write and happy to get off my plate. My husband, photographer Adam Bacher, is in NYC with the press corps for Clinton's Global Initiative, which starts Tuesday. He's attending a conference with Pres. Kagami of Rwanda on Monday. This has all come about quickly and ...

Everyday Heroes -

True heroes don't wake up in the morning and say 'I think I'll be a hero today.' Heroes understand what needs doing and do it.The phrases 'in the trenches' and 'on the front lines' were originally used to describe troops in battle. These days, they have meaning in addition to positions in war; they are often used to describe dangerous and critical occupations: physicians, nurses, EMTs, ...

Do men plan what they're going to wear when they give a reading?

Or is it a woman thing? Or is it a personal narcissistic ritual that has no connection with any reality whatsoever? I have a reading on Monday evening. Part of my weekend is editing down a 20 page short story for a 20 minute reading. Which also means I'll be walking around the house holding a watch and talking to myself (well, reading aloud actually). The other part of my weekend is ...

When novelists sober up

When I moved to Portland, OR and got to know some of the writers here, I discovered they were a group of jogging, coffee-swilling granola-eating types. A great Saturday night date was a reading at Powell's books and an espresso. I was disappointed - not in the reading scene, but I had imagined that the writing life in the Pacific Northwest would lead to alcoholism on a grand scale. These ...
