Trying to Find the Sweet Spot
So many things mark our entry into older age that it hardly seems worthwhile talking about them. Certainly I have detailed enough about the slowly changing body on these pages. But I do want to say a few things about reading glasses.
Okay, so maybe reading glasses aren't such a big deal, but for years, I was the only member of my family of origin that needed no lense correction. I was far and near-sighted free. My mother, father, and two sisters all needed glasses. I was able to spot a billboard a mile away. I could read read exit signs from an airplane. I was super eyeball girl. I was Miss, Ms, and Mrs. 20/15. At least I had THAT going for me.
And I still am 20/15 at a distance. Up close, I'm doing that pull away come close thing. I tried to read off a roster last week, one with almost all Korean sur-and first names, and I was back and forth, up and down, and I knew that the glasses I'd been forced to order the week before were inevitable.
So I sit before this computer today, trying to find the sweet spot in my progressive lenses. There--no. There--okay. 20/15 again.
But I'm not quite used to the idea. In fact, this morning my editor asked for a synopsis, and I spent two hours writing the thing without my handy glasses. It wasn't until I got blurry that I realized I needed to put on my glasses. Whoops!
So I'm taking off the glasses, turning off the computer, and going outside, going out to where I am still 20/15 without correction!

I went through denial

Now I find myself putting on a second pair of reading glasses over the first pair--not because I couldn't see with the first--simply muddleheaded. Oh, how sweet it is.

I'm passing through denial
and now just putting on the glasses! But wow, so hard to accept.
