What Have We Lost When We Lose Civility?

September 29, 2009, 12:43 pm

Liberty
Liberty

The ability to speak; the right to speak; the skill of articulating what we care about; civil rights; human rights; discovery of new ideas; fresh ways of looking at a problem; solutions to problems; human contact; value for the lives of others; respect for ourselves; ability to curb violence; chance to teach our young an anti-violence way of being; honesty; the past century of human rights advances;

 a reason to have children; things our grandparents worked for; a chance for a peaceful future; influence in the larger world; respect from other nations; the opportunity to close the gap between the haves and have nots; mutual understanding; sense of Americanness; resistance to collaboration with bullies; perspective on how easy we fall into fascism;

remembering how to make intelligent arguments; seeing other's point of view; belief the US embraces us all; belief in the country at all; leaving an untainted legacy; knowledge that being loud isn't being right; everything your mother taught you about manners; everything you might teach your kids about manners; great advances in science, health, civics that come from people trusting enough to work together; focus on the important issues; liberty...

and on and on and on and on and on......
