Goldenrod...

October 27, 2009, 6:32 pm

I've been studying the goldenrod along my fence...and played around with a few pictures downloaded from my camera, this photo turned out to be my favorite so far...it reminds me of one of my favorite paintings, Charles Burchfield's watercolor, Goldenrod in December, 1948...(Whitney Museum of American Art, 74.62, follow link for photo and a complete entry: http://www.davidrumsey.com/amica/amico266784-125220.html) I always loved his work, very lively mark making...looks like home...

I've always suffered from allergies and back in the day when I was a child, goldenrod was associated with itchy watery eyes and a very stuffy nose (these symptoms ruined many family vacations and always made the first month of school extra "special" because I was feeling compromised)...but I never disliked the flowers themselves (even if I tried), a field of goldenrod in bloom at the height of August is even a beautiful sight for my itchy eyes...although this lovely gold heralds the end of my favorite summer season, I do love what the frost of autumn does to the goldenrod, it transforms into silver...a field of gold turned into a fuzzy pale haze...a landscape painter's fairy land...in this image from the field surrounding my acre of the world I see my latest work in progress, Layers of Illusion has come to life...although the book is years from being finished, I have in mind that this photo (or an image of similar spirit) will be on the cover...
