Preparing for the Life of an Author

October 15, 2008, 10:17 pm

I have written two poetry books, yet I am not ready to proclaim myself as a Red Room Author. I have a little bit of work to do.

First, I am starting to get back in the habit of writing everyday.  Sometimes it's beautiful, sometimes it's painful; but, it always a relief to release a hidden world from my womb, my wounds.

Second, I need to prepare for next summer. I am considering applying to Cave Canem (poetry), VONA (fiction or screenwriting), Tin House (fiction), or Interlochen (fiction or screenwriting).

Third, I need to prepare for next fall. I would like to take one philosophy course and one creative writing course at a college. Between now and then, I need to figure out how to pay for it.

Fourth, I think I would like to volunteer to give free writing workshops to people in hospitals. I'm not sure what type of hospital, perhaps a mental hospital, perhaps a children's hospital.

Fifth, I believe I would like to re-learn German.
