It is so tiring to see people take this conservative/ liberal thingy that is so popular to such ridiculous heights.  Somebody must be making a lot of money on these rants.  My neighbor wrote a letter to the paper full of vitriol about liberals. Who the heck is he talking to?  In this small town America nobody here believes in murder, communism, the death of babies and taking away people’s rights.  Are they trying to create another way to hate people who are just like them?  Is there a shortage of hate that we have to stir up some more on the merest of differences exploded by gifted hucksters on radio shows who could talk you into buying an ash tray for you motorcycle?  Naw here in small town America everyone has the same basic values. We all want to live peaceful lives of honor, kindness and truth.  I don’t know, though, maybe getting up a good rant over nothing is very lucrative do you think?  Maybe I will start a new church, which will touch on the emotions that society has buried but are a hot button for people. . ones that make people dig out their checkbook.  It doesn’t have to be true, just grab that personal anger and fear.  Oh. . Somebody already did that?  Who would have thought?

Money and power are very much behind much of this I agree. Vested interests protecting themselves by manipulating the gullible with plenty of well-funded disinformation. But as to why the gullible are so manipulable... I just revisited Richard Hofstadter's Paranoid Style in American Politics. His portrait of angry, deluded, fearful, conspiracy-obsessed citizens rings as true today as when he wrote it in '64. A minority to be sure but a loud and insistent one, near-impossible to shut up.
