Reflections: Post Nanowrimo

After being behind the ENTIRE month, I finished last night, almost 24 hours early. Final count - 50,224. This might have been both the most difficult and the easiest Nano I've done so far (this was number 4). Because of a huge amount of work in October, all of which I wanted to have out of the way and off the desk, symbolically and literally, November 1st, I was overwhelmed and undermotivated ...

Word count and Sheffield cemeteries

Well, it's down to the home stretch - the last four days of Nanowrimo. I suppose I should have carbo loaded LAST night. If I do it today, combined with tryptophan, I'll be napping for Nano, not writing. So, I'm on the writing athlete's diet during the closing days of this marathon - coffee, water, energy bars . . . and whatever protein is lying round the kitchen, when necessary. It's ...

And counting . . .

34,380 words and counting. Otherwise known as 68.8%. Otherwise known as "still behind". Oh yes.

Nanowrimo update

current count . . . 32,654. And it has come to my attention that although technically there are eight days left, given the pattern that has already emerged, realistically I personally have SIX days left. Well then, I better get to it, eh?

Creating a la Nanowrimo

Day 16 word count goal: 1,667 x 16 = 26,672 Current word count: 23,842 I'm plugging along doggedly on my Nano novel, trying not to get stalled out, worrying about silly things like quality. Or continuity - I'm fairly sure my main character's aunt was childless about 5,000 words ago but now has a three year old son named Toby. Ah, the beauty of invention according to need. I'm getting more ...

I know

I know y'all are out there, I can hear you breathing. Someone peeks in the doorway, does a quick scan of the room, looks at me, looks at my open laptop with the grubby Nanowrimo stickers on it, mutters a quick "Sorry, I was looking for an author who . . . " and as I look up rather hopefully, if perhaps a teeny bit ingratiating, that someone says, "Uh, sorry to bother you." ...

Inside the ice cave

Sunday, as I was on my way to a cafe to write I noticed my attention to what I was doing went in and out of focus. That can be dangerous when you're accident prone, as I often am - Dear Red Room landlords - just send the dry cleaning bill to me. Ooops. - but it's also something that is a "writer" thing for me. The experience of moving from the real world to the internal one of the ...

Do I match the room?

I've entered the Red Room for the first time. Looking round a bit. There's always that creeping anxiety, isn't there. Will I fit in? Do I clash with the wall paper? Am I dressed appropriately? Red was never my color, but then as I've got older and I've let the gray in my hair make its presence known, perhaps red is just the thing for me. Do let me know if I do anything stupid, won't you? ...
