What's So Funny 'Bout Fiction: On the Hoaxed Memoir

Every day there seems to be a new author putting his or her hand up and admitting to lying about their identity or memoir. It's as if we were at a 12-Step meeting for authors and one man's confession produced a wave of copycats. Why are authors faking their memoirs rather than writing fiction? Perhaps it's because of public's obsession with "what really happened". Here's my take:

Very interesting article. I like memoirs and have noticed the memoir section in the bookstore growing. I do believe that readers are fascinated with the truth; it's sort of like a more classy reality tv show. As memoirs become more popular with the public, authors write more of them, and therefore there is bound to be more foolery out there.
