Don't Hate Me, But

June 25, 2009, 4:00 pm

Just back from France and I'm preparing for my next residency at Red Cinder Creativity Center, on the Big Island of Hawai'i.  I'm trying to make the most of my teaching leave, which ends mid-August.  So I'm going for a two-week writing residency at a dream house provided for artists and writers, on the southern side of Mauna Loa.  It's only 25 dollars a day, food is another 25 dollars for three meals provided by local chefs.  The director and owner is a painter, Helen Chellin, who's as nice and attentive as one could wish for.

It's remote, no cell phones, no wi fi.  We've said that before!   This time it's for real.

Some years ago I started a series of poems at Hilo, and now I can open that door again, and let the flowers and perfumes and ancient goddesses whisper.  I'm listening!  My friend Annie in Auvillar said, "J'espere que le volcan n'a pas le meme horaire que toi!" ("I hope the volcano doesn't have the same schedule as you!")

To top this off, I've been invited to cover the residency for "Poets & Writers," which includes a special section on artist colonies in a spring issue.  I love writing for them.  The editor, Mary Gannon, is a gem.  She's a real editor, and her suggestions always make an essay stronger.

I'm starting to get back in shape again after all that foie gras--getting ready for papayas and mangos and climbing up the lava beds.  Assuming our wake-up schedules don't coincide!

Malo, Marilyn! (Don't know how to say it in Hawaiian, but malo means congratulations in Samoan.)

Would you fulfill another eating request for me? Fresh pineapple. It doesn't come into season until late in the year in Samoa, but maybe, because Hawaii is further north, the timing is more suitable.

I love your assignments!

You sound as if you've traveled widely, and lived many lives!

Well, I joined the Peace Corps in my salad days.  That sort of gets things rolling. . .

You aren't doing so badly yourself, Marilyn!

Marilyn Kallet says:

Interesting!

I've been determined to savor this teaching leave, since we only get them every 5 or 6  years!  They'll have to catch me to get me back in the classroom...

Yes, once bitten by the travel bug, it becomes a challenge to stay home for long.  But it sounds as though you are making the most of your opportunities, and that is to be admired.

Marilyn Kallet says:

Thanks!

Where does your travel take you next?

Ellen R. Sheeley says:

Am travel weary and just moved, so I'm hoping to stay home for a spell, Marilyn.  But I was in Paris for work part of the time you were in France (i.e., last month).  Didn't have time to grab that crepe I'd been craving, which is why I asked you to have one for me.  :-D

Marilyn Kallet

Marilyn Kallet says:

I can relate to the weary!

I did, I did!   I had the nutella crepe in Collioure and thought of you.  It was sinful!

Dorraine Darden

Dorraine K. Darden says:

Oh Mangos!

A big congrats, Marilyn! To Hawaii and your Poets & Writer's assignment. I'm so excited for you. If I could add to Ellen's list, mango's would be great!

Marilyn Kallet

Marilyn Kallet says:

Definitely mangoes, Dorraine!

I take your assignment to heart. Hope all is going swimmingly with you, your work!

Don't hate you?

The hell I won't hate you! But seriously, this sounds as idyllic as it gets. I'm jealous - but in a good way. I'm also going to look up this residency as soon as I'm done writing this.

Safe journeys!

Just sent comment instead of response, but meant to say: Do it!

This is an ideal situation, the price is so good, the atmosphere so beautiful and friendly.   Has your name all over it!

Marilyn Kallet

Marilyn Kallet says:

Do it, Evelyn!

I love the tone of the place, the director is an artist herself and very friendly, the locale is super exotic, and the price--my goddess! can't beat it--

Enjoy Hawai'i, Marilyn! And happy writing!

Catching up with you..

I just went back to mid-April and read your blog up to now. I reread a few and then picked up on unread blogs starting when you flew with your fears to France. That day I postponed reading thinking I would wait and savor your trip on a slower day. But somehow life has kept overfull and I failed to savor. I have not been out of the country, but two trips to Oklahoma City, one to northern Illinois, and just daily stuff like my computer quitting, adjusting to beautiful new one that I hate (it is pretty though), etc. have filled my life. (Okay, I admit it. I no longer have the energy level I once had. GRRR.) Anyhow I enjoyed vicariously knowing you were writing from a twelth-century village and wished I were there. I won't hate you for going to Hawaii as that does not sound quite as enticing--but it may when you write about it.

Marilyn Kallet

Marilyn Kallet says:

Sue, thanks for getting back in touch!

Great to hear from you! I hate the computer glitches--we are so dependent on them, and do they appreciate it? They do not!

Auvillar was fabulous--maybe come with me next summer? Just a thought. We're doing writing and cooking as well as writing and photography.

Hawaii--we'll see. It's bound to be luscious. I'll report back from the orchid front!

Write on--Marilyn
