My Favorite City is Not a City
My favorite city is not a city, it's a tiny village with 900 inhabitants--more a large family than a metropolis. It's Auvillar, where I go to commune with the poplars and the Garonne River, to interact with my dear friends the villagers, who are so welcoming. I go to eat well (the crepes, the olives, the prosciutto), where the wine makes me swoon. The place is laced with poems--they are everywhere, and when I go there I sing, I wrap myself in the cloth of poetry, there are songs in the air and in the walking sticks tapping on the sacred pilgrimage ground. The water is clear, clean, and refreshes deeply.
400 fleeing German Jews, mostly teenagers, were hidden and saved in Auvillar and the vicinity. Is that not reason enough to choose this village?
I'll be going back, May 17-24. Come with me! http://www.vcca.com/kallet.html/

"Everything is poetry in Auvillar"
As poetry transforms life into bearable forms and states of intelligence, how then can one not love such a village and proclaim it a city among cities... Thank you for taking me there through this post.

Thanks, Michael,
I was blown away by reading the memoirs of Resistance members from the region.
All cheers to you--

Yes, it is reason enough to find poetry in the nooks and crannies of Auvillar. I'm not surprised you love it so much. Your description alone makes me want to throw clothes in my suitcase and get there as soon as possible.

Seriously, take a look at the Virginia Center website for VCCA France.
All good wishes to you and your work, M

Hi Marilyn,
I had no idea that Auvillar only had 900 inhabitants. It sounds like an amazing and idyllic village. I can't wait to hear the stories you will tell of your return there.

Friendly people, too. As long as you say, "Bonjour Madame!" "Bonjour Monsieur!" they're on your side completely--
