Michael Lipsey Epigrams, Maxims, Aphorisms

“Politicians are the hand puppets of their speech writers.”

It’s tax time, and it’s election time, and I offer a few political epigrams.

“A government that is not feared could not collect enough taxes to make a living for itself.”

“Politicians are the hand puppets of their speech writers.”

“It’s unfair that polls influence elections, even when they’re wrong.”

“The oppressed peoples of the world long for democracy -- but not for our kind of democracy.”

And from my first book of epigrams:

“Our faith in democracy is shaken by the election of a complete fool.”

“Congress tends to resemble itself more than it resembles the country.”

“We were told we were winning the Vietnam War until the last Americans were helicoptered off the roof of the embassy.”

Pitty the political bloggers -- in this crazy season they have to post about every twenty minutes and they’re starting to get heart attacks at fifty. As an epigram blogger I post when I’m in the mood -- we think we terms of centuries, because human nature is the material, and that doen’t change much. Making fun of politicians is a cheap shot because they have become so ridiculous. I’ve heard several people say recently that no one in their right mind would run for President. Speaking of which, here is one more from my new book:

“When the Presidential couple go to bed, a Secret Service agent is always stationed at their bedroom door -- not listening, of course.”
