where the writers are

Monday Snippits: When do you write?

November 1, 2009, 9:54 pm

This year for National Novel Writing Month, I'm trying to pay closer attention to my good writing times.

For example: I can't write in the afternoon. My brain goes to sleep, it's hard to concentrate, and usually I end up taking a nap.

I write pretty easily in the morning.  But I do need more time to get really started, and I have to be sure and eat breakfast first.

My best writing times are at night.  I get into the flow more easily, and write faster.

This month, I'm trying to actively use this information. For example, I'm getting up a little earlier today to do some writing, becaue we have a dinner to go to tonight. I know I won't be productive if I try to write after work, so I'm splitting it up, some before work and some after dinner.

How about you?  When do you write best?

Hi Miriam

Gina writes from the moment she wakes to the moment she sleeps, stopping only to get ready and the usual during the day (bathe, eat, drink, etc). Saying that, she also tends to continue working while eating and drinking. As for hours, her clock is always flipped around, so she tends to be up early in the afternoon and continues to work until around 5 am. As you can see, with my responding now, it is 6 am in the UK and I'm still up because she is still working.

Hope your marathon day went well. :)

It went great, thanks!

I was actually alert for the whole day!. The Dracula play was good, very creepy, and I got some good word-count in at the write-in.

Gina's got an intense schedule! I'm impressed. If I could, my internal clock would be more like that. I love nighttime. Unfortunately, I have to get up early and serve coffee to morning people...

Are you a night person, or a morning person? (When not staying up with Gina) Also, have you started your Nanowrimo project yet?

Miriam

PS. I just this moment remembered that one of my main characters in the book I'm working on is named Gina! :)

Hi Miriam

Sounds like you had a fantastic day, great!

I am definitely a night person, but normally have to adhere to normal working hours like most people. As for NaNo.... erm.... you'll have a chuckle, methinks. I wrote 2000 words, thought it was the biggest pile of rubbish I've ever seen in my life, erased it, spent all night thinking of a new story and then wrote 315 words! LOL! Ah well, it's a start. :)

Anytime, anywhere!

I write best whenever the fancy strikes me. I also write better and better the longer I sit and write. I do take a break every 30 or 40 minutes though, escpecially if I'm writing something new and original. Editing is a different ballgame. Often I spend hours and hours editing without a break. I find editing less taxing than writing because I'm not pulling the words out of thin air, I'm working with something that's already there. My nanowrimo novel, "Comma Coma Boy", is going well. I've met my day 2 target easily. I'm planning on a chapter a day.

Miriam Forster says:

I'm pretty sure rubbish comes with the territory. :)

At least, that's what they tell me. Next time don't erase it, make it into a dream sequence for your character. That way it still counts for your word count, but you can easily take it out later. (Also, hooray for night people!)

Quenntis- Editing is more fun overall for me, though sometimes I get tired of the book. :) I'm glad your Nano project is going well, and I'm intrigued by your title, What's it about?

Comma Coma Boy

Comma Coma Boy is a young adult book about a boy who falls into a coma at night and unleashes the sleeping superhero within him. Clark thinks he's dreaming about all these amazing things he can do, but it's all true. He's a superhero. But is he a good one or an evil one?

Thanks for the tip, Miriam. :)

I'll bear that in mind. I'm not too bothered about the word count to be honest. I'm just using NaNo as an excuse to kick myself into gear and start writing something. It's fun and I'm already very excited about what I'm writing. Blimey, didn't expect that! LOL!

Quenntis, I'm really look forward to following your progress, on both novels!

Miriam (and anyone reading this blog!), if you want to add me as a NaNo buddy, my ID is OokyOokOook http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/565225 - Yes, I am a Pratchett fan. :)

Ooo!

Quenntis, that's a really fascinating premise! I'll be interested to know how it turns out!

Ryoma, I added you as a Nano buddy! I'm glad you're excited about what you're writing. That's the best feeling, isn't it?
