After graduating from Grinnell College with a bachelor’s degree in English literature in 1964, and despite having been accepted at the prestigious Writer’s Workshops in Iowa, Coyote moved to the West Coast to pursue a master’s degree in creative writing at San Francisco State University.

The Grateful Dead sent me and Kesey’s people and a couple of Hells Angels and a couple more Diggers to London to see the Beatles and check them out, to see if they were as socially progressive as they were musically progressive.
